ABOUT ANDY NATHAN
I help professional men become more capable in the relationships that matter most.
I’m Andy Nathan, a men’s relationship specialist based in Edinburgh.
My work is for men who are capable, responsible and often successful in the outside world, but who find themselves defensive, avoidant, shut down, resentful or lost when their closest relationship asks more of them.
This work is personal
I did not arrive at this work through theory alone.
Like many men, I learnt early how to survive, adapt and keep going. I became capable, responsible and good at holding things together. But survival strategies do not always become relationship skills.
Much of my work now is helping men understand the difference between the adaptations that once protected them and the patterns that now cost them connection, trust and intimacy.
The path here was not tidy
My own life has included childhood sexual abuse, violence, bullying, addiction, depression, anxiety, PTSD, countless relationship failures and suicidal ideation.
For years, I knew how to survive. I knew how to function. I knew how to appear capable.
But I also know what it is to carry shame, fear and old protective patterns into the places where love, intimacy and responsibility ask something deeper of you.
That is part of why I do this work.
Not because I believe men need fixing.
Because I know men can survive a great deal and still need to learn how to become safe, honest and present in the relationships that matter most.
I know what it is to look capable and feel lost
For years, from the outside, I looked like I was functioning.
Career. Responsibility. The ability to keep going.
But inside, I was anxious, disconnected and often second-guessing myself. I did not grow up with a man who could show me how to handle emotions, conflict or relationships. So when life became messy, I had no real map.
Emotionally, I was often a much younger man trying to live inside an adult life.
The professional path into this work
Before specialising in men’s relationships, I spent more than twenty years in professional and leadership environments, working with people, pressure, performance and responsibility.
I also spent many years working in wellness, embodiment and nervous-system practices, including breathwork, yoga, meditation and trauma-sensitive approaches.
That background matters because the men I work with are rarely short of intelligence. They are usually short of the ability to stay present, regulated and honest when the relationship moment becomes difficult.
Teaching yoga, meditation and breathwork helped me understand the body, the nervous system and the ways men can carry pain long after they have learnt to function. It also gave me more than 10,000 hours of experience facilitating large, diverse groups in person.
Depth, not performance
My work is shaped by Jungian depth psychology, men’s work, relationship pattern work and years of professional practice with men.
I am currently undertaking MA-level training in Jungian depth coaching for men, and I have trained within The Mankind Project.
I also work closely with Laurence Johns, whose decades of experience in men’s work, leadership and facilitation continue to shape the standard I hold in this work.
Why I work with men
I have worked extensively with both men and women. That matters.
Women have shown me, again and again, what it feels like to live beside a man who is shut down, defensive, unavailable, resentful, overworking, pleasing, controlling, or trying hard but still missing the point.
Men have shown me how often those patterns are not caused by a lack of love, but by shame, fear, immaturity, old survival strategies and skills they were never taught.
My work sits in that gap.
What I help men do
I help men understand what is really happening in the moments they keep getting wrong.
The argument that escalates before they know how it started.
The silence that feels safer than telling the truth.
The apology that changes nothing.
The work, logic, fixing, pleasing or withdrawing that keeps them protected but leaves their partner alone.
Together, we uncover the blueprint underneath those patterns.
Then we train the skills, steadiness and responsibility required to do something different when it matters.
